Proteins are difficult to use in man-made filtration systems because proteins are very fragile. It is difficult to reproduce. So the researchers decided to use carbon nanotubes, which is very powerful. These nanotubes are 0.8 nanometers wide. Water channel proteins are slower because they filter out all ions, including protons. In order to do this, the water molecules flip 180 degrees in the aquaporin channel, and the chemical reaction slows down the molecule. Carbon nanotubes do not filter out protons, which allows a faster filtration system.
However, this still allows the nanotubes to filter out seawater very well. Nanotubes can be included in artificial membranes one day, removing ions from sea water and converting them into fresh water.
