Researchers are able to convert more than 40% of the sunlight that hits solar panels into electricity. Professor Martin Green of the University of New South Wales said in a statement: “This is the highest efficiency of solar energy ever converted into electricity. The traditional method uses a solar cell, which limits the efficiency of converting sunlight into electricity to about 33%. Newer technologies will split sunlight into four different parts, which enhances the level of conversion. The 40% efficiency level was tested in the renewable energy labs in Sydney and the United States. The technology can also be used to install on people's roofs, and there are currently 15% to 18% of efficient solar panels. Higher conversion levels help reduce renewable energy costs. Green believes that solar power will be cheaper than coal in 10 years.
